Why Don’t Magnets Affect iPad’s?

Magnets and electronic devices have been enemies for a long time. In order to reverse the trend, the new devices are being designed so they are not damaged when magnets are nearby. The first-generation iPad is not affected by magnets, but interestingly the iPad 2 is.

No Magnets Required

The reason the original iPad is not affected by magnets is that the device does not use magnets for shutting down and opening up the screen. The iPad 2 does use magnets, so the screen will turn on and off when the covers are put in place. People have discovered that you can actually play around with the location of the apps by using a common kitchen refrigerator magnet on an iPad 2, as long as no apps are being used and the iPad needs to be locked.

It is possible to shut off the settings for unlocking and locking the screen, but then your iPad 2 screen will stay up all of the time. You will have to manually shut the screen off, otherwise your battery will quickly drain.

Flash Memory Changed the Game

New electronic devices are no longer in danger of being damaged by magnets because most of them use flash memory. In the early days of computer technology, information was stored on floppy disks. Those disks used iron oxides in certain patterns that computers would read to access the memory. Iron and magnets are attracted to each other; so it was easy to wipe a disk by swiping a magnet over it to rearrange the iron oxides. Now flash memory uses silicon, which is not disrupted by magnets at all. The big worry with modern electronic devices would be an electromagnetic pulse, which would take out most devices very quickly.

Pacemakers and iPads

When the iPads were designed, they actually had magnets put in them so the covers would stay in place. You will not damage your iPad with magnets, unless you happen to find an extremely powerful one (that would damage more than just an iPad). Even though the magnets are rather safe inside of the iPad, they can be potentially damaging to people with pacemakers fitted. When the iPads were placed close to the chest, some people’s pacemakers actually turned off. Once the magnets were moved away from the pacemakers, they did turn back on and worked as normal.

Alternative solution for iMessage not working

iMessage is widely known as the instant messaging service provided by Apple Inc. This service allows its users of iOS 5 and above to send texts, videos, pictures, contact data through 3G, Wi-Fi or LTE. With the use of iMessage the sender can see when the other user is typing back the reply. When a reply starts, a grey ellipse appears on the text bubble who is typing the reply. The best feature about this is that a conversation can be continued from one device of iOS to another. But iMessages work only on iPhones that have iOS 5 or more, or mountain lion and newer versions.

Problems with iMessage not working:

Apple has recently accepted the fact that there is a bug in the operating system of the newly created iOS 7. This operating system seems to have created a problem for the iPhone and iPad. The problem that has taken place is that it has stopped text messages from being sent by iMessage. The user seems to notice the problem when the status bar present in iMessage gets stuck all of a sudden before it reaches the end part. As a result of this, some messages take many hours to be sent and some messages cannot be sent at all. Now the problem has turned so big that people are frequently encountering problems with iMessage and FaceTime not working after the new update of iOS 7. For some people the problem was with iMessage not working properly as mentioned before and for some it just wouldn’t activate. This also resulted in FaceTime calls failing for real.

Solution from Apple to fix the bug:

Apple has declared about developing a software update to fix this problem. But since messages are instantly necessary it has now become essential to find an alternative way to make iMessages work properly.

Alternative solution for fixing the bug:

Since there is some time to kill before the new update of iOS 7 arrives so there are a few things one can try to solve this problem but there is no guarantee that this will work for sure, however for some people it has been quite helpful.

  • Firstly turn the FaceTime and or iMessage off and then again turn it on using the toggle in the settings.
  • Turn the cellular data option off in settings of cellular and ensure Wi-Fi connections are secured before doing so. After this go to the settings then proceed to general settings and then to reset and click on reset network settings. After doing so the phone would require a new connection set up, after which iMessage should work properly.
  • If the previous method doesn’t work, then it’s better to back up the iPhone and restore it.

These are some of the possible solutions for iMessage to work correctly for iOS 7.0.3 if it’s not doing so in the first place. But if it still doesn’t work then there is no other choice than having to wait for the new update from Apple.

How To Improve iPad Battery Life

Of course you love your iPad and use it for everything but the most annoying thing is when your battery runs low! No one wants their battery life to fade so follow these easy tips to extend the life of your iPad’s battery and get more done while wasting less energy:

  1. Turn off push notifications. Push notifications allow your device to frequently connect for new messages so that you can be updated to the moment on anything new that happens. Turning off push stops your iPad from constantly grabbing at the servers to notify you of something new. Fetching works basically the same way and you can set your device to fetch hourly under the manual settings to conserve energy and still keep up to date.
  2. Lower the Screen Brightness. This is the very best way to conserve your iPad’s energy and it may be more comfortable to work with a dimmer setting. Auto-brightness will adjust the screen level for you or you can control it manually.
  3. Update your Device. Keeping your device up to date with the latest Apple updates will improve battery life as it runs better and is more compatible with the applications that you’re using.
  4. Turn off Bluetooth. Unless you’re actively connected to a Bluetooth device there’s no need for your device to search for one to connect to.
  5. Turn off Wifi. The same concept is true for wireless internet. Most of the time you will want to be able to connect to every free wifi source at your disposal but for times you know one isn’t available you can conserve a little energy. For example, there’s no reason your device should be looking for internet while you drive down the freeway and play Candy Crush. You can easily turn it on and off in your settings.

Apple Security Too Rigid!

Apple have a very good reputation where security is concerned but one family from London think their security measures are far too rigid.

Anthea Grant’s will said she wanted her estate to be divided between her five sons, included in her estate was an iPad she had bought when she was diagnosed with cancer, mainly to keep in touch with her boys. After her death they discovered that the iPad was locked but they did not have her Apple ID and password so they contacted Apple, unfortunately Apple insisted that written consent would be required giving them permission to unlock the device, even though they had explained that this was impossible since their mother had died. One of her five sons, Josh Grant, said “We obviously couldn’t get written permission because mum had died. So my brother has been back and forth with Apple, they’re asking for some kind of proof that he can have the iPad.” The bereaved family have provided Apple with copies of legal documents and a letter from a solicitor to prove their case but Apple still insisted it was not enough and asked for a court order, the family felt this was unfair as it would have cost more than the device was actually worth.

Apple says that it leads the industry in security and protecting customer details, activation locks were in place to deter against theft and to protect against access to online iCloud accounts via stolen or lost devices. Mr Grant said he was a big fan of the technology giant but that he thought that “it’s a bit cold of them not to treat things on a case by case basis”

Apple has since agreed to restore the factory settings of the iPad after acknowledging that it may not have fully understood what the family required, however the company will not allow access to the iCloud account, insisting that a court order would still be needed for this.

Global opinions on Apple’s stance in this matter have been divided but most seem to feel that they have been rather over-bureaucratic and inflexible, particularly as the family provided the will, death certificate and a letter from their solicitor. Yes, security is extremely important and not something to treat lightly but Apple could have been much more helpful to this family during their time of bereavement, a little compassion certainly wouldn’t have hurt in this case.

Apps for the iPhone and iPad improving people lives

There are many apps available in the app store that improve people lives this may be small things like keeping people entertained with Angry Birds while travelling on the bus or more serious health care related apps that could literately save lives. Today I am going to focus on hearing aids and how new developments will mean your iPhone can help you hear. All apple fans love when a new device is released many often hate its changes but these same people will wait years before before buying some technology that could help them hear, a hearing aid. The problem is a new Apple device or any tech device for that matter is considered cool, exciting and a must have bit of tech. A hearing aid on the other hand is not cool or exciting although for many it really is a must have bit of tech. Hopefully a new collaboration between Apple and hearing aid manufacturers will repair this issue. GN ReSound a Danish hearing aid company have announced that its latest line of hearing aids will be compatible with iPhones and iPads over wireless.

At the most basic level all the information from the iPhone including calls, music, or navigation can be sent directly to the hearing aid allowing the user to fully experience the sounds on offer.

A nice feature is called Live Listen, if you are in a busy and loud environment hearing can be a challenge for people without hearing difficulties, Live Listen sends the audio directly from the iPhone to the hearing aid, so you can pass your iPhone to the person you are trying to have a conversion with and benefit from the talking directly into your ear with all the noise cancelling benefits iPhone microphones offer.

The technology is only just getting started but it will be interesting to see how it develops in the future.

Apple is the most coveted smartphone brand

It is now official that the Apple iPhone is the most coveted beating the Samsung Galaxy and all other Android devices. 32% of people want an iPhone compared with 29% wanting a Samsung and a surprisingly high 13% still want a Nokia (clearly these people live in the past). As with Ferrari, Aston Martin and other high-end makes although they may be the most coveted doesnt mean they sell the most. This in my opinion is a good thing if everyone has one, no one is unique and the product losses its appeal. With this in mind Andriod devices still dominate the smartphone market in emerging markets where brand snobbery is not such a factor and to be honest more important factors are considered such as functionality.  The race for emerging markets is heating up with the likes of Facebook getting in on the action. Nokia has always traditionally dominated these markets but just like in the west has lost its way. Meanwhile Samsung is ramping up its efforts and has doubled it smartphones sale in Africa. App store stats are also particularly interesting if you are an app developer as figures as high as 40% are users from emerging markets, this figure is less on Apple’s app store however this is still 28%.
